Reproductive Justice

ILERA defines Reproductive Justice as the complete physical, mental, spiritual, political, social, and economic wellbeing of women and girls, based on the full achievement and protection of women’s human rights. This includes women and girls human right to maintain personal bodily autonomy, have children, not have children, and the support to parent the children in safe and sustainable communities.

To achieve reproductive justice, we must:

• Centre the underserved. The most vulnerable need to be able to access healthcare and full human rights to live self-determined lives.

• Decolonize sexual reproductive health and rights.

• Implement the The Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa (the Maputo Protocol)

• Carry out community participatory research to identify barriers to health and additional needs of the communities we serve.
